Last Week’s Annual Meeting: Stay Engaged in Our Work on Housing Issues

September 26, 2019

Last week’s Annual Meeting breakfast was a morning of insightful discussion on the history of housing and segregation in 20th-century America. The BBA presented its John G. Brooks Legal Services Award to four organizations collaborating to find solutions to Boston’s housing displacement crisis, and the event’s keynote speaker, author Richard Rothstein, gave a fascinating talk on aspects of his most recent book, The Color of Law: A Forgotten History of How our Government Segregated America. We hope you will stay engaged in our work on housing issues.

As the Harvard Legal Aid Bureau’s Eloise Lawrence stated during the event, the vast majority of tenants facing eviction do not have access to a lawyer, creating a significant justice gap.  Click here to receive updates on how to support the BBA’s work with the Right to Counsel Coalition: A Campaign for Justice in Evictions, advocating for the right to legal counsel for low-income tenants and small landlords in eviction proceedings.

Want to help?  An important way to increase access to justice in eviction cases is by volunteering with your local Housing Court Lawyer for the Day program.  Learn more about volunteering with the BBA’s legal services partners below:

Thank you to the Boston Bar Foundation’s Joan B. Di Cola Fund for its support of the Annual Meeting. The Joan B. Di Cola Fund was founded in 2015 to support BBA programs and initiatives that foster the education and professional development of lawyers, especially those that focus on training new lawyers, integrating law students into the bar, and providing funding for speakers.
